MALAYSIA - April 2014
MH 370 - A shocking Malaysian experience.
Like 911, the plight of MH370 shocked Malaysians in many complex ways. The ongoing search has baffled the public and professionals alike. Was the flight path mechanical in nature or man made. Of course we have many other theories, ludicrous as some may sound, needs a sound rebuttal.
Lets start with the first week of the flight's plight.The search in the south china sea and a Malaysian general in somewhat broken English say about a ping heard near ButterWorth-Penang. Well no one believed him, and search went on near s.china sea with picture from china's radar; further complicated the search. Only after a week with radar reading from other countries were put together by immarsat and of course from spy satellites;did search change to indian ocean.
Malaysia was not prepared because we did not have the technology nor felt the need in investing in national security issues. Its not about submarines that cant float :). But it was sad that countries who had the technology to scientifically figure this out; were stuck in trust issues. It took time and we are there with Australia leading the direct search.
Perhaps its our attitude, a traditionally friendly nation. We don't need hardware but software - people. Need basic sea controls/etc..if we can't handle the pirates in the straits of Melaka. wtf

Malaysia - Post 2013 Election - Update
Malaysians should be proud that their election, although free but unfair, processed peacefully. Now the post elections politicking albeit DSAI and DNR actions - see RPK's blog - http://www.malaysia-today.net/
More Malaysian women voted than men! WTF. More Malays - 56% voted UMNO-BN (update..46% only??), Indians perhaps 50-50 (update 65-35??) and Chinese about 90% maybe. Unsure about numbers - as these are based on unverified information.
Wondering if the ABU campaign somewhat scared Malays into backing UMNO. You can't only blame UMNO, and not MCA and MIC. Guess the acronym ABB or ABM didn't rhyme :).
But Harris must be congratulated for his efforts for Bangsa Malaysia, and plea for the 40% poor. Heard him say his not against the average UMNO voter; but not often enough. I think he played some significant role in turnout of Chinese voter; and even Indian voters.
Too many uninformed voters in Sarawak; It seems people aged 21-29 have voted more in west than east malaysia.
Need study of undi tolak - spoit vote - see Kuala Selangor - 1.68% - 934 votes with majority of only 46%, btw average undi tolak 1.52%. Sungai Besar is even worse -BN majority of 399 - undi tolak is 1.82% or 690 votes.

Political Analysis - Malaysia - April 2013
Malaysia is undergoing an interesting political experience due to the rise of the opposition, political parties and individuals via the information revolution. Political maturity is growing among the young and older malaise Malaysians.
The ruling party(s) BN - UMNO, MCA, MIC etc is trying its best to change, and it appears the PM has a major hurdle in trying to convince the electorate. It is possible but difficult. How badly does he win? Can BN lose?
The Malaysian opposition come in many shades of colors, and I mean many; and that is why it is perhaps one of the most interesting political untold stories.
DAP's LGE is doing a good job in Penang, his economic and social policies are working; but the party public policies are unstructured and lack diversity. Their recent party election recount was unprofessional; but credit to DAP for promoting good governance policies.
While PKR is the main opposition and a more diverse party than DAP and PAS, its leadership structure is less understandable or clear. But the party is resilient, with younger leaders emerging. This maybe the last election for DSAI and he deserves the opportunity.
PAS is perhaps the most interesting party, especially among non Malays. Although politically PAS is viewed as the most ethical party, sometimes its social policies lack detailed explanations and a modern understanding of the public versus private sphere. Despite this scenario, non-Muslims openly support Mat Sabu from PAS. I think Indians in a 'quiet way' welcome PAS style social policies due to the discouraging statistics of Indians in alcoholism and illegal activities. I am unsure but PAS appears to be more reasonable in dealing with Hindus.
Since 2008, disparate Indian parties emerged, but lacked political savvy and seem to stick to one issue, one race based public policy - which is not sustainable, like the arguments about the bumi policy. Income based entitlement reform will address all poor people; especially the Malays and Indians. Its reasonable to call it bumi policy if its income based, and its equally reasonable to fund estate workers education and housing reform policies, if its income based.
Immigration reform is another vital policy that should start with red IC Malaysians, of Indians origin as well as other recent immigrants. Unless we can learn to treat our servants, tourists and immigrants decently, we can't implement effective public policy.
Remember the most important rule in public policy is enforcement. Are you listening BN!

HAKIM - RIP (1958 - 2012)
Mr. Hakim F. Abdul-Rashid was born Gary Wayne Morris, April 20, 1958 in Flint, Michigan, the son of Hattie and Webster Morris. Hakim attended Flint Community Schools, where he graduated from Northwestern High School, “Class of 1975.” Hakim, thereafter in 1982, served his country in Germany as a member of the United States Army. During his tour of duty, he earned numerous Medals of Honor. Subsequently, Hakim earned a Bachelor’s degree from the University of the Virgin Islands, St. Thomas in 1990; and a Juris Doctorate from Atlanta Law School in 1994. Throughout Hakim’s lifetime, he utilized his talents to serve as a devoted public servant for God’s people throughout the United States and abroad. Hakim Served as an Internal Auditor for CARE, an international Human Services Organization; Auditor for the Internal Revenue Service (IRS); and Chief Internal Auditor for Dallas County Schools in Dallas, Texas. Hakim was truly an achiever, who grew professionally and spiritually as he traveled his life’s journey. Hakim continuously exemplified God’s loving spirit by maintaining a caring, loving relationship with family and friends.Hakim was a strong arm of support and inspirational force that inspired and uplifted family, co-workers, and friends.

Hakim was an honorable man who had a deep sense of integrity, impartiality and fair judgment in his work. One of his favorite sayings was that the facts will speak for itself and he lived by this creed, even when faced with career hurdles. Hakim had extraordinary abilities as a Certified Internal Auditor and Certified Fraud Examiner. He was one of the best. Auditor; meaning a listener or hearer in Latin characterized his work ethics.
A Hindu Prayer for Hakim
Our scriptures teach us that just as pilgrims unite and separate at a public inn, so also fathers, mothers, sons, brothers, wives, relations unite and separate in this world. He who thus understands the nature of the body and all human relationships based upon it will derive strength to bear the loss of our dear ones.
All ripe fruits must drop down from the tree. Death closely follows a man wherever he goes and wherever he sits, and returns with him until his journey ends, however long may be the distance traveled.
On behalf of the entire community, we offer our heartfelt condolences and together we offer our prayer: May the Lord grant strength and courage to the surviving members of Hakim's family. To all relations and friends may the Lord grant ability to give comfort to the bereaved families. May the Lord grant everlasting peace to the departed soul.

UMNO - MCA - MIC
The umno-mca-mic of its founders was based on race, in a good way; but corruption - unequal distribution of opportunity has made us Malaysian really think outside of race in our politics- the language of democracy.
PKR-PAS-DAP group has been a good alternative; but need new blood; nurul, lge, etc. Whats interesting is PAS is not race but religion based; Non Malays like PAS for its non corrupt politicians who reasonably respect their religion as well.
I don't think the opposition will gain vote by complaining about UMNO, MCA, MIC as fundamentally wrong due to being race based. Come on man. its ok to be proud of race - in humility. Complain about how BN policies have failed.
Then again are there any reasonably non corrupt UMNO-MCA-MIC. :)

Jon Stewart - The Sanity Rally - Modern day political revolution
From the tea party rallies to the rally (s) to restore sanity and/or fear! With the worst economic crash since the great depression; the american ppl have woken up; taking competing ideas of public policy. All done with free and fair election. Real democracy in action.....Anyway, JS's woodstock type rally...music..theatre, comedy, and a FU moment to the media..n right & left wing politicians.
JS at times passionate plea that we are actually working together everyday (to overcome fear with simple truths) , but the media & politics tell a different story.
The benediction was nice..plea for signs from god..and religions to sit on common needs like those who dont eat pork....
JS screams on the exhauting effort it takes to hate...marks the moment of his revolution.
JS makes more sense on public policies that work. He is deeply inquisitive in questioning guests and puts most political media to shame. His skids make fun of our fundamental insecuritiees; that we learn from it.

Malaysia - God's Name - Feb 2010
Troubling news about church attacks over the use of the Allah. No one died. These attacks were really minor (compared to similar events world wide) and in a weird way...good...because it shows Malay culture in its actual form. Peace loving people.
I am not saying there are no extremist among us...but aren't we all racist. It’s fine to be proud of race and not religion.
Anyway about religion, as a Hindu I had never conceptualized the church/christians using the world Allah, growing up in KL & La Salle Boys school! The name was associated to the muslims, but later learnt Arabs of the Abrahimic tradition use the same name –Allah.
The church had done a lot of good work in east malaysia & proselytizing the bible in Bahasa, using the term Allah, as God. I disagree with the Church because theologically one only gets to Allah following the muslim path. If you follow the Christian path, then call it something else. I am lucky (being a Hindu) because I can call god many names.
I am sad the Church is taking legal action over a mere word when teaching the words of Christ is more important.

RPK - Fugitive Freedom Fighter - 2010
Malaysia's first modern freedom fighter, Raja Petra Kamaruddin or RPK is one the run, escaping the country unseen and unheard, from the clutches of the Judicial & Political system.
Well he is never unheard, blogging about the inner sinister secrets of our politician, from both sides of the aisle.
Whats really spectacular is; his claim of access to information,initial skepticism aside; often turn out true.

Is Rocky Bru pro-umno?
Perhaps. But not the traditional pro anything goes umno. I think in a way he prefers a strong 2 party system; based on his writings all these years. He is not pro PKR. I have read most.
Note umno/mic/mca have long histories...my dad started mic in our neighbor hood helping poor indians with dues/etc. But there is too much corruption and we need the 2 party system to eradicate or reduce corruption. I am not anti MIC...but certainly not pro MIC. Lets give PKR 5 year and impose term limits for PM. Else vote the reformed umno/mca/mic back!

Cheney Dithering Obama?
Actually Cheney is correct that Pres Obama is dithering. But this dithering is good because of soldiers' life's are at risk. The tragic event at Ft Hood further shows intelligence weaknesses in domestic risk. Fighting the war there and not here at home is not strategic.
Iraq and Afghanistan are quite different problems. Getting out gracefully from these countries is a long process.
Sending more troops to Afghanistan may bring more problems in the long run. It would depend on how strategic war plans with Pakistan, and other related countries are formulated.
Iraq was a sad, badly managed war. Rookie mistakes by war managers after the soldiers were warmly greeted in Baghdad, was quite disappointing. Inability to manage change rationally was unbelievable.

Executive cuts on bonuses paid to increase employee salary helps the economy & the Executive. We have to bridge the gap between non-executives and executives.
